Increasing sales of e-bikes across many European countries mean that it is even easier to transport children in bike trailers. This led the Touring Club of Switzerland to carry out exhaustive independent tests on the top five selling models for 2 children. The overall victor was the D’Lite from Burley bike trailers.
The TCS is the leading mobility club of Switzerland and is comparable with organisations such as the AA , RAC, etc. Their report confirmed “The D’Lite model from Burley bike trailers was convincing with very good results for all test criteria. It got the best marks for handling, safety and comfort.”
Company CEO Allison Couglin was delighted with the result, saying “we are really proud that our premium model D’Lite came top in such a reputable test, especially in this our 40th anniversary year. It is also really important for us that we got the highest score for safety, as the safety of these small passengers is our highest priority, without any room for compromise.”
Burley Bike Trailers SGS-Tested: Winner & Role Model for Safety
Burley is not just the pioneer for children’s bike trailers in general but plays a key role in the introduction and adherence to safety standards. ASTM F1975-09, for example, is the original bike trailer test which Burley created in 1995 and which was later adopted by the independent international ASTM standards organisation. This norm sets out physical tests, including tests of the coupling, compression, stability, capsizing and a road usage simulation.
Tests of the Burley bike trailers are carried out by the independent test authority SGS, with a worldwide reputation for testing, verification and certification. Coughlin added that “ASTM F1975-09, EN 15918, REACH, EN 71-3, LFGB, StVZO as well as a variety of relevant European chemical requirements are all completely fulfilled. As far as the rolling road simulation is concerned, we set the bar at 2 ½ times the prescribed level and even go to 5 times for the pull-push test. It’s simply a fact that we build very robust and very safe trailers.”
Burley Bike Trailers D’Lite “Highly Recommended”
Should you jump to the conclusion that such a robust trailer would mean heavy weight, you would be on the wrong path. The Burley D’Lite trailer was by far the lightest product in the Swiss test as just 12.8kg. This low trailer weight does not just make towing easier but also increases riding comfort. The testers also scored highly the small dimensions when folded and the user-friendly bike linkage.
Additional positive comments from the test report include “the practical cover with insect screen includes an adjustable sunshade and a rain cover that can be rolled up. The trailer has springs, which have five different settings according to the weight being transported. The trailer has reflectors on the wheels. The handlebar is infinitely adjustable and easily secured in the desired position. The trailer also has a robust, simply designed brake which is therefore unlikely to suffer defects.” (TCS Test Report in German.)
The Burley bike trailers D’Lite model was awarded 71 out of 100 points and was thereby overall winner, receiving the “highly recommended” commendation.
As the inventor of the children’s bike trailer in 1978 in Eugene, Oregon, it is good to see a company with this 40-year track record in well thought out design, longevity and safety being able to confirm its position through such independent testing.
