German bike manufacturer Silverback has told us of their latest Scalera Aero carbon fibre bikes with some impressive features.
They have made use of wind tunnel simulations to perfect the design of each of their components, for example with truncated aero tubing and horizontal top tube. From the design, they progress to the build, with Toray carbon fibre so the bikes are stiff yet light in weight and race ready.
Their wind tests tube on these carbon fibre bikes shows how the air flows around the aerodynamically shaped top, which provides less air resistance thanks to its horizontal design, featuring a tapered profile from front to rear. Even with a 30° degree yaw angle, you can see how the air flows smoothly around the aero tubing profiles. Once the wind tunnel tests are completed to test and optimise the design, they head out into the real world for live testing.
Some of the design features assist the stiffness and keep the bike responsive when pedalling and turning, but also help provide more comfort, for example, the rear stay uses small cross-section truncated aero tubing profiles which gives comfort on a compact stay.
At the other end of the carbon fibre bike, the advanced aero carbon fork blades cut through the air, but the large cross section is stiff and strong. There is custom offset fork geometry to suit the size of the bike and the rider, giving accurate steering and predictable handling at any speed.
One feature of this carbon fibre bike is the integrated seat clamp which minimises wind drag compared with over an external clamp, their integrated clamp being inside the aerodynamic frame structure. Similarly, cabling is routed internally.
The Scalera utilises the Shimano Ultegra 6800 groupset for their durability, reliability and light weight, with Ultegra ST-6800 2×11 shifters. The cassette is the corresponding CS-R800 11-25T 11-speed. The Shimano Ultegra FC-6800 50/34T crankset by model size is as follows: 49 cm L 165mm; 52cm L 170mm; 54/56cm L 172.5mm; 58/61 L 175mm.
For those interested in racing these carbon fibre bikes from Silverback the frame and fork are UCI approved. Silverback also won a design award for the Scalera from Eurobike, the biggest European trade show for bikes and cycling related products.
Silverback offers their Scalera carbon fibre bikes in 6 sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL.
Rims are Vision Team 30, alloy clincher, deep section, 700C. The hubs are also Vision, with QR 114L at the front and QR 146L, 21H at the rear. Tyres are Vittoria Rubino Pro, 700x23c, Kevlar bead, 150TPI.
The saddle supplied on these carbon fibre bikes is the Prologo Nago EVO STN.
