Crossing The Caucasus By Bike

Interesting discussion last week with Manuel Schuerholz, the CEO of Cologne based Bombtrack Bicycle Co, who showed me a trailer of a bike ride by one of the company’s customers.

Marc Maurer bought a touring bikefrom Bombtrack; the model is appropriately called a “Beyond”. Marc then rode from Cologne to the Caspian Sea in 2014 and decided rather than to fly home, he’d just turn around and ride back. That’s quite an epic journey.

He set off in May of last year headed for Istanbul and the Caucasus Mountains. His journey will ultimately total 4000km, passing through culturally rich regions of Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and finally Iran. Along the way he visited many stunning locations across the Caucasus.

Marc was traveling alone for the most part, but occasionally met up with friends for certain stretches of the journey. His daily companion was his ‘Beyond’, which is designed to be capable for virtually any adventure you have in mind. On road or off it, the Beyond uses a geometry that ensures a stable and solid feeling no matter how loaded the bike is. Marc was carrying everything he needed with him thanks to a set of bike bags and rear pannier bags. In addition to the luggage, Marc made a few other adjustments to the bike for his trip, with a TT bar, dyno hub and a Flite saddle.

You can view the trailer of the 20 minute film online.

Manuel Schuerholz is offering the documentary to bike clubs who would like to see the film of this remarkable ride, so if you are looking for something to fill a club evening in the coming winter, contact the company via their website.
