Registration for the twenty-ninth edition of the International sportive “La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare” (The Alps of the Sea) started this past Halloween week-end.
The Gran Fondo organization have set the 2016 date for July 10th. As always, the meet-up for all amateurs and enthusiasts is the day before, on Saturday 9 July in piazza Galimberti in Cuneo (North-West of Italy), with the collection of the spectacular race jerseys and bibs and race packages, combined with other additional events.
This year’s two routes have been confirmed again for 2016: the first one is the MedioFondo of about 111 Km (2500 m of total ascent) and the longer route the Gran Fondo of about 177 Km (4125 m of total ascent).
As in previous years, there is an early bird offer: it’s just €35.00 if you register before December 31st, 2015. As is traditional, the starting grid of La Fausto Coppi is abolished in favour of the “Salviamo le strade di montagna” project (“Save the mountain roads”). Last year this project made it possible to ride, in total security of roads closed to traffic the routes from Castelmagno to Col Fauniera (2485 m), and the Valmala uphill.
This year again, alongside the name of La Fausto Coppi, there is the Le Alpi del Mare sponsor. The Euroregione Le Alpi del Mare (Euroregion “The Alps of the Sea”) is the first European grouping of economic interest bringing together the bordering Chambers of Commerce of Cuneo, Imperia, and Nice (North West of Italy and South East of France).
Finally, the International Gran Fondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare 2016 joins the new North West Italy Circuit “Nord Ovest Road Cup” which includes the Alassio SIXS Gran Fondo, the Novara Marcello Bergamo Gran Fondo, and the Torino Gran Fondo. These four top events have times recorded and there is a final prize-giving. And there is also a discount offer for those who “subscribe” to the four races: 20% discount on the total price of each entry fee.
The International Gran Fondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare is maybe one of the hardest though fascinating cycling marathons in Europe, with its 4125 m of total ascent. Every year many cyclists from all over the world take part in the event, proudly wearing the unique Jersey, which is decorated with the National flags of all the Countries attending the 29 editions. The event sees the attention of RAI Regione (Italian national radio-television of the Piedmont region), of La Stampa (one of the top Italian national newspapers), and of many European specialized magazines. This year again the marathon got the recognition of the French magazine Le Cycle, which included it among the 50 best European Gran Fondo events.
