Polaroid, one of the world’s most recognized brands, has announced a new version of its Polaroid Cube “lifestyle action camera” – in time for Christmas shopping.
The previous 2014 model had widened the market beyond the enthusiasts of extreme sports, partly through its competitive price point, but also with its range of colours, features and accessories. The 2015 Cube+ model is WiFi enabled so it can be paired with smart devices, particularly making use of an app, available for both Android and iOS, which make it possible to access a viewfinder, control the camera, and save images and video directly to tablets or phones.
Additional upgrades include image stabilisation – handy when you’re capturingoff road cycling (or even on road on some of our country lanes!) – and 8 megapixel still images, as well as video enhanced from 1080p to 1440p at 30 frames per second. With the higher resolution in both images and video, it’s good to see that the memory slot can work with MicroSD cards up to 128 Gb (class 10), up from the previous 64 Gb. The high capacity battery permits up to 107 minutes at 720p at 60 fps. That’s still nowhere near a day’s touring – but thank heavens is probably the reaction of my family members, who wouldn’t want to watch several hours of POV (point of view) video!
The camera is shockproof, weather-proof and splash resistant (not “water proof”).
The Cube+ is shipping internationally for $149.99 with a 128 GB micro SD and case. Accessories such as suction, tripod, helmet and strap mounts, waterproof case, and monkey stand are available, ranging in price from $17.99 to $39.99 at polaroidcube.com.
