Young E-Bike manufacturer Klever’s new X Series caused a stir when it was introduced at Eurobike, the leading European trade fair, back in the autumn of 2016. These E-Bikes, which were designed for urban mobility, have now gone on to win internationally renowned awards. The design language and the successful integration of the various components managed to convince the expert judges for the iF product design award 2017 and the Red Dot Design Award 2017.
The Klever X Series E-Bikes also scored in the on-road tests: the 45 km/hr version X Speed won the “ExtraEnergy Pedelec Award 2017” in the “Lifestyle Pedelec” category, and the model X Commuter was nominated for “E-Bike of the Year 2017” by the Association of the Dutch Bicycle and Automobile Industry (RAI).
Notable features of the new Klever line of E-Bikes are the distinctive shape of the frame and a straightforward appearance. The E-Bikes will be delivered in 4 versions for the 2017 season: commuter E-Bike, brisk single-speed E-Bike, S-Pedelec (X Speed) and a luxurious “Limited Edition,” the latter with integrated electronic gearshift.
Most bicycle and E-Bike manufacturers choose a traditional diamond shape for their frames, whereas Klever collaborated with the renowned Darmstadt-based German design studio Artefakt on the development of a rhombic loop (“Loopframe”) that elegantly encloses the battery. This fact alone makes the bike stand out visually from the mass of new E-Bikes for the 2017 season.
With the cables placed on the inside of the frame and the stem, carefully selected components and an unobtrusive colour design, all E-Bikes of the X Series exhibit a very straightforward, clean overall appearance. “The overall concept and the system integration are valued highly, especially in the urban sector,” explains Fritz G. Baumgarten, General Manager at Klever Mobility Europe, in view of the current trend. “Market analyses show that customers are now thinking of E-Bikes not so much as bicycles with auxiliary drive anymore but rather as a product category of its own. It is this customer segment that we are aiming at when developing our E-Bikes.”
Klever X Series comes in four versions for the city and for commuters
For the four versions of its X Series, Klever relies on the time-proven unisex concept in two sizes (M and L), on the strong Biactron rear-wheel drive from its own production and on the associated control systems which include a Bluetooth-enabled LCD display and electronic theft protection.
The X Series’ excellent riding behaviour is ensured not only by the rigid frame but also by a long wheelbase and 27.5-inch wheels with extra-wide “Schwalbe Super-Moto-X 27.5 x 2.4” tyres which simply swallow up irregularities in the road surface. Their virtually silent, low-wear rear-wheel motor with a lot of tractive power and their maximum load of 120 kg make the E-Bikes of the Klever X Series an ideal choice for ambitious frequent riders and commuters. And with those striking looks, you will make an impression with this design E-Bike in front of any trendy café.

The Limited Edition model marks the peak of Klever’s X Series. Visually based upon the X Raw model, this model uses various premium components. In practice, these can be realised safely and comfortably without any problems. This is guaranteed not only by its stable riding behaviour but also by a suspension fork with 80 mm suspension travel and by the hydraulic Formula CR3 180-mm disk brakes which allow for safe deceleration at any time.

New X-Series available for the 2017 cycling season
The first Bikes of the series are currently being delivered to the authorised Klever dealers in accordance with the orders that have been placed. “We have changed our distribution model, and we are excited about the great response in terms of pre-orders which we have received after the Eurobike trade fair,” explains Fritz G. Baumgarten. “Over the course of this year the E-Bikes of the X Series will be delivered to the customers. In order to be able to do this we are in the process of expanding the capacity at our facility in Cologne.”
It will be interesting to see which UK dealers take up this range.
