A few days ago, the BBC reported that the West MidlandsPolice were targeting drivers who didn’t allow enough room when passing cyclists.
The force had analysed 564 cyclist deaths over four years and found that the “vast majority” were down to driver error, which probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to regular cyclists.
While the Highway Code (rule 212) is somewhat vague when it says that motorists should give cyclists (and motorcyclists) “plenty of room” when overtaking, this is widely interpreted as being 1.5m.
There is an obvious difficulty in measuring that gap and a significant problem in providing proof.
It is therefore useful that an American company, Codaxus LLC, based in Austin, Texas, has a handlebar mounted electronic system which is designed for the purpose of detecting, capturing and displaying the proximity of passing vehicles.
Their “C3FT” uses an ultrasonic detector on an adjustable arm to provide rapidly a distance measurement on a numeric display. The photo and diagram show the product mounted for cycling on the right, but the company assured us that the system can be mounted to capture the details of cars passing on the right, as would be the case here in the UK. They also have a configuration for the 1.5m distance, as well as the 3 and 6 feet they require for different administrations in North America.
Codaxus also supply a mount for an optional video camera such as a GoPro to record the display and traffic activity.
In the same way that West Midlands Police are starting with a driver education program, the police force of Chattanooga, Tennessee, did the same. Obviously the authorities could use the captured data to prosecute should that escalation be deemed necessary.
